Lanka Lutheran Church (LLC) pastor Rev. Devanesan Subramaniam says church members are among 15 families who have been moved to a campsite following heavy rainfall and mudslides that by 18 May, had killed more than 30 people across the country and displaced over 350,000 people. Subramaniam said three vicars, who are candidates for ordained pastoral ministry, serving in local congregations around Nuwara Eliya district are among thousands whose homes were damaged by the recent mudslides.

"I hope that our fellow Lutheran brothers and sisters will show their solidarity in every way possible..." Rev. Govindan Nadaraja

The LLC is assessing the situation in the nearby Nuwara Eliya district, where most of its members live, so that it can provide the assistance required. The Sri Lankan government has deployed troops and other personnel to assist and evacuate those affected in Kegalle district. "I hope that our fellow Lutheran brothers and sisters will show their solidarity in every way possible as we meet the needs of those who are affected," said Rev. Govindan Nadaraja, president of LLC. The LLC has 5,324 members and it joined the LWF in 2001.
